LIVE-INS

PROBATIONARY MEMBERS

What motivated Conlin to join the Claymont Fire Company?
"I personally was motivated by a current members father who had told me about the department. After looking into the department through social media, I knew it was a place that I wanted to be. I wanted to surround myself with motivated people that took pride in their work."

What are some memorable experience Conlin has had while volunteering with the Claymont Fire Company?
"I personally was motivated by a current members father who had told me about the department. After looking into the department through social media, I knew it was a place that I wanted to be. I wanted to surround myself with motivated people that took pride in their work."

What has been the most rewarding part of Conlin's journey as a probationary firefighter at Claymont so far?
"By far, the most rewarding part of my journey so far would be completing the live-burn to become Engine cleared. It was a true test of both my mental and physical strength. Upon receiving the news later that day that I had passed, I felt a true sense of accomplishment and pride in myself. Working alongside my fellow probationary members as a team, and passing the day together, I feel made our
sense of team chemistry stronger."

What advice would you give to someone considering joining the Claymont Fire Company or
pursuing a career in firefighting?

"One of the best pieces of advice I could give would be to leave your ego at the door. Pretend that you
are new to the fire service regardless of your history with other departments. Be a sponge and soak in
everything that you are taught and everything that people say. With joining a new department comes
new ways of operating and you are expected to learn new tactics and techniques that may be unfamiliar
to you. Learn, train, and ask questions, but leave what you think you know at home."

What does Conlin enjoy most about the training and development opportunities at Claymont Fire Company?
"There are endless opportunities to become the firefighter you want to be. Everyone pushes you to be the best and to hold yourself to the highest standard. The Probationary Guidebook lays out in black and white what is expected of you, and steers you in the direction needed to become a fireman with the Claymont Fire Company. Coming from a department that operates differently, the Guidebook as well as the hands-on training, teaches you everything you need to know as a new member. If you don't know something or are not confident in a skill, I guarantee a member/live-in will be happy to teach you and train you to correct it."
